Sandviken Hill.

Travelling for approx 1 hour east of Stockholm , toward Gustavsberg , brings you to the north western tip of the beautiful island of Vindö . As you drive away from the city , your journey starts as a motorway then  gradually narrows until becoming a single track through the pine , oak and birch trees .

Just before the road ends

in forest , you’ll find

“Sandviken Hill.”

The house is on over 2,000 sq.m of land mixed with many different tree types and flowers.

The first ‘house’ was built here in the 1930’s . That is now the garden shed.

A new , much larger house was constructed in the mid 1960’s on top of the hill.

It was then extended and modernised in 1996.

As you enter the grounds of Sandviken Hill , on your left is the little Guest House with Bunk bed and a pull out bed .

Our children use it during the day as a play house and for ‘sleep-overs’ ( when one of their friends is coming over to stay with us ).

Outside the Guest House is a nice flat grass area great for Frisbee , badminton , croquet and generally just running around.

Next , is the ‘Workshop & Gardening Shed’. Drive a little further and you come to the parking point. From here you walk the last steps up to the house. Before going up the stairs to the main entrance , you’ll see the

bath-room which is fully tiled with heating and heated towel rails. There is a great shower ( no bath) , toilet and washing machine.

Up the stairs , and you come onto the huge sun terrace deck ( approx 50m²) . This is the best feature of the house as it wraps around the house with views through the tree tops across to the Sandviken (Sand Bay ) and the Sea . At around 20.30 you can see the massive cruise ships as they quietly slip past on their way from Stockholm to Finland and the Baltic States.

The terrace deck has sun all day from morning breakfast until the late summer evening bar b q’s.

From here , depending on the time of year , you can listen to the owls , cuckoo’s and woodpeckers as well as many other birds. Look down from the terrace deck and see deer quietly tiptoe through the forest or if your lucky , even see an Elk ( as we have seen in Aug 2002 ) Other animals to be seen are badgers , hares and red squirrels .

Using binoculars , scan the horizon and tree tops to the other islands or sail boats.

From the terrace deck you enter the main house . Directly ahead of you is the ‘Blue’ dining room with extendable table seating upto 8  . With windows on three sides,  from here you look north through the tree tops to the sea. I’m sitting there right now typing this out on my laptop. I often work from here. The mobile phone signal is full strength so still contactable with the outside world ( if you want to be ).The terrace has two sets of wooden table and wooden chairs.

Two sun umbrellas , two bar-b-ques and just wonderful views.

Round the back of the house

near the tree’s is the Hammock

for those quieter moments in

the sun

Next is a narrow bedroom made up of a bunk bed and sofabed. ( used by our kids ). Passing by this room , there is space for hanging coats etc and a large wardrobe with shelves for more clothes. You’ll then  come into the living room. A burgundy coloured sofa bed , chairs , TV ( SVT1 , SVT 2 ,  TV4 ) and a nice fireplace , wooden floor  , nice lighting to enjoy reading a good book in the evening or sit around the fireplace playing games or cards.

The living room leads into the kitchen .

By normal country house standards this is very new and

modern.

It has dishwasher , microwave , fridge , freezer , electric oven

and hob ( with overhead filter fan).

The kitchen is equipped with just about everything to be like

at home.(even wine bottle opener )

Behind the kitchen is the last room – another bedroom. Two

single beds linked together , late night reading lamps and a wardrobe ; the room is small but sufficient.

Whats nearby :

For short term needs like , ice creams , sweets , newspapers , milk , postcards , pastries , frozen foods ; there is the Abborkroken shop , about 8 mins walking down the hill.

Sandviken and Ladängen Bay .

These are lovely for swimming

( Ladängen being more used by

all the kids as it’s also

the meeting point for them .

Its sandier for swimming and

better for evening fishing along its jetty ) .

Sandviken ( Sandy Bay)

“Just popping out for the newspapers”

For a larger selection of shopping, drive to Djurö ( 20mins by car ) where there is a good ICA supermarket , bakery , small DIY shop.

The nearest Hypermarket with bank ATM is in Gustavsberg. (30km away ).
